4 Types of Solar Power Systems
Off-Grid Solar System
An off-grid system is not connected to the electricity grid and therefore requires battery storage. An off-grid solar system must be designed appropriately so that it generated enough power throughout the year and have enough battery capacity to meet the home’s requirements. The high cost of batteries and inverters means off-grid systems are much more expensive than on-grid systems and so are usually needed in more remote areas that are far from any electricity grid.
Grid-Tied Solar System
On-grid or grid-tie solar systems are by far the most common and widely used by homes and businesses. These systems are connected to the public grid and do not require battery storage. Any solar power that you generate from an on-grid system (which is not used directly in your home) is exported onto the electricity grid and you usually get paid a feed-in-tariff (FiT) for the energy you export.
Hybrid Solar System
Due to the decreasing cost of battery storage, systems that are already connected to the electricity grid can start taking the advantage of battery storage as well. This means being able to store solar energy that is generated during the day and using it at night. When the stored energy is depleted, the grid is there as a backup, allowing consumers to have the best of both worlds.
Emergency Backup System
The emergency backup system will keep your light on when the grid goes down. Perfect for load shedding periods. Your backup time will depend on the amount of storage you have. The backup systems main components consist of an inverter and battery storage.
Solar Power System Components
Solar Panels
The panels are available in different physical sizes and can generate various amounts of electricity.
Inverters
The input voltage, output voltage and frequency, and overall power handling depend on the design of the specific device or circuitry. The inverter does not produce any power; the power is provided by the DC source.
Solar Charge Controllers
When the battery bank is nearly full, the controller will taper off the charging current to maintain the required voltage to fully charge the battery and keep it topped off.
By being able to regulate the voltage, the solar controller protects the battery.
Batteries
Batteries used in home energy storage typically are made with one of three chemical compositions: lead-acid, lithium-ion, and saltwater. In most cases, lithium-ion batteries are the best option for a solar panel system, though other battery types can be more affordable.
